Welcome to Bet.ID Podcast. The podcast where I talk
about Indonesian language and things related to it so that you can improve your
listening comprehension and get to know more about Indonesia and its cultures.
I’m Jeff
This is the English version of podcast
episode 7. In this podcast I’m gonna talk about languages in Indonesia. As I
stated in the previous English podcast. Indonesian is a language to unite
Indonesian people because every tribe in Indonesia has their own language.
I did some research on the internet
and I found that there are some 700 languages in Indonesia, 718 to be exact.
These languages are really a language not just an accent or a dialect. For
instance Spain and Mexico, both use the same Spanish language only their
accents are different. But in Indonesia these 718 languages are really a
different language from one language to another.
So they have their own vocabulary
and intonation. In fact these languages affect how an Indonesian would speak in
Indonesian. So for example an Indonesian who comes from Aceh, which is a
province in the most western area of Indonesia, would speak in a different
tone, intonation, and wording compared to a person from Papua, which is a
province in the most eastern area of Indonesia. But both are Indonesian native
speaker.
But unfortunately, nowadays these
indigenous languages of Indonesia are started to become extinct. It is
because, in most cases the young generation feels that if they speak these
languages, people would consider them as an old-fashioned man. So generally
speaking, these languages only be spoken amongst the old generation. But I
think rather than be shy with the indigenous languages, we should be proud of
it because it’s not a shame. Instead it’s an heir, a heritage that we should
keep.
Thank God, nowadays much effort has
been done to preserve these languages. Even some young generation have a share
in preserving these languages. For example some of these languages are being
taught in school and being used widely on the online media like internet,
social network, and also on telly.
But you might wonder of one thing.
How different is the Indonesian language and these local languages. Well I
guess, it would be too long, I mean the duration, if I talk about it in this
podcast. So let’s talk about it later. But I hope you got some new insight in
this episode. Okay, so I guess that’s it from me today. If you’d like to learn
