Podcast #27 - 4 Facts of Manado? [English Audio]

Hello and welcome to Bet.ID Podcast. The podcast where I talk about Indonesian language and things related to it so that you can improve your listening comprehension and get to know more about Indonesian and its cultures. I’m Jeff

This is the episode number 25. This podcast is requested by a friend from England. Hello there! So, she asked me to share a few things about my hometown. I was thinking of telling my hometown history but then I decided not to do that since it would be too long. Before we go further, if you’d like to read the transcripts for this episode, just click the link down below.

I guess some of you might know that I am from Manado. So, Manado is one of Indonesian cities and it is located in the North Celebes province. North Celebes shares a border with Philippines. Today I’m not gonna tell you about the history of my hometown but I’m just gonna go over 4 facts which I found on internet and I’m gonna confirm these facts whether they are true or not. So, I found 4 facts about Manado, are they correct? Let’s find out!

1.       Manado is the second biggest city in Sulawesi

The article says, ‘Manado is the second biggest city in Sulawesi right after Makassar, its area is about 15.726 hectares. It consists of 11 districts and 87 sub-disctricts.”

Well, actually it’s not called district and sub-district because we’ve got some words in Indonesian for those words. I’m just doing a free translation now. So, is this 1st fact true? Well, I guess it is.

2.       Manadonese cuisine is well-known of its spicy taste

It says, ‘Manadonese cuisine is popular of its spicy yet delicious taste. That’s why the Manadonese always try to maintain the chili price stable and affordable since it is one of their cuisine main ingredients.’

So, is this 2nd fact true? 1000% true since we really like spicy food.

3.       Manadonese women are popular for their beauty

It says, ‘One reason why there are many beautiful women in Manado is because back then many Manadonese women got married to Dutch men. This interracial marriage was the reason why there are many beautiful women in Manado.’

It sounds a bit racist to me because beauty is relative. Everyone has their own preference about this matter. So, I’d say that this so-called 3rd fact is not true.

4.       Manadonese language has so many loanwords

It reads, ‘Many years ago, Tondano which is a region in Manado was colonized by the Portuguese. In fact, the people there were really welcome with Portuguese culture. That’s why there are many Portuguese words in Manadonese language.’

Is this 4th fact true? I believe it is. For instance, fork is garpu in Indonesian but in Manadonese it is forek, it came from Dutch. Good bye is selamat tinggal in Indonesian as well is Manadonese yet we have a slang for saying selamat tinggal in Manadose that is Vaya con Dios and it came from Spanish I believe. Child is anak in both Manadonese and Indonesian still we also say ‘kodomo’ for child which came from Japanese and many other loanwords. So, I can confirm that this 5th fact is completely true!
